Event details

Sombrero Beach spends the Fourth of July as Marathon’s community gathering point, with daytime beach activities and local festivities building through the afternoon before fireworks rise over the Atlantic in the evening. As one of the few sandy beaches in the middle Keys, Sombrero draws a loyal crowd even on an ordinary day, and the holiday programming simply extends that appeal into the evening hours.

The beach’s east-facing position over open Atlantic water gives the fireworks an unobstructed backdrop, distinct from the bayside settings found elsewhere in the Keys. Because Marathon sits roughly midway between Key Largo and Key West, it draws a mix of travelers already stationed nearby for fishing, diving, or a longer Keys road trip, rather than visitors making the drive specifically for the show.

Staying in Marathon over the holiday opens up the middle Keys’ particular strengths: snorkeling at nearby reefs, boating access, and state parks less crowded than their Upper Keys counterparts. The fireworks make a fitting capstone to a day already spent on the water, and an overnight stay lets visitors extend that rhythm into the following morning rather than facing a late drive home.
