Help place flags across Vicksburg’s national cemetery
Volunteer the Friday before Memorial Day to place flags on thousands of graves inside Vicksburg National Military Park, honoring generations of service.
Event details
Memorial Day Flag Placement at Vicksburg National Cemetery is a volunteer morning inside Vicksburg National Military Park in Vicksburg, Mississippi. From the cemetery’s bluffs above the Mississippi River, you will help place a small American flag at each of the thousands of gravesites, joining park staff and the Friends of Vicksburg National Military Park. As we move through the grounds, the rolling hills shift into a broad field of red, white, and blue that remains throughout the holiday weekend.
You will check in at the Vicksburg National Military Park Visitor Center, then head into the cemetery for a focused, respectful placement. Plan to arrive by 7:45 AM for instructions ahead of the 8:00 AM start; timing varies with turnout, but the work is typically finished by noon. Flags and any needed tools are provided, so you can show up ready to participate.
Dress for uneven grassy slopes and hills with comfortable closed-toe shoes, and bring water plus high-SPF sunscreen since the morning sun can be strong. Parking at the Visitor Center is limited, so carpooling helps. The event runs rain or shine, so a light poncho is smart if showers are possible. Participation is free and volunteer-led; all ages are welcome, and children should stay supervised to preserve the quiet decorum. For this activity, it is best to leave pets at home.
If you are coming from out of town, stay in the Vicksburg historic district or near the downtown waterfront for quick access to the park. You can also browse regional vacation rentals on Lake.com for a comfortable base for the Memorial Day weekend.
