Honor Kaua‘i veterans with lei in Hanapēpē
Join Girl Scouts and locals at Kaua‘i Veterans Cemetery in Hanapēpē to place lei on headstones and take part in a Memorial Day ceremony.
Event details
On Memorial Day morning, you can begin the holiday with the Memorial Day Lei Draping at Kaua‘i Veterans Cemetery in Hanapēpē, along Kaumuali‘i Highway on the island’s west side. Local families and Girl Scouts place fresh flower and ti leaf lei on headstones, creating a community-led tribute that feels distinctly of Kaua‘i. You are welcome to attend, and your presence is part of the respect shown to those who served.
Plan for a traditional program that often includes a color guard, guest remarks, and Hawaiian prayer blessings, followed by wreath and lei presentations. For the clearest view without crowding, stand along the perimeter of the ceremony area so you can watch the tributes and see the lines of graves as they are adorned. When taps is played and floral offerings are made, keep conversation to a minimum and stay still.
Arrive by 9:00 AM for parking and to choose a comfortable spot before the 9:30 AM start. Admission is free, with no tickets required. Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring water, since the Hanapēpē sun can be strong by late morning. If you want to contribute, check in advance about donating lei materials such as fresh flowers or ti leaves in the days leading up to Memorial Day.
The ceremony typically wraps up around midday, leaving you time for a coastal drive or a turn inland toward Waimea Canyon. If you are staying nearby, the south shore and west side keep logistics simple, with vacation rentals in Poipu or small inns in Waimea. We also suggest browsing Lake.com for quieter regional stays that suit your pace. In light rain the ceremony usually continues, so pack a compact rain jacket, and plan to leave pets at home out of respect for the setting.
