Drape lei and flags at Kāne‘ohe’s veterans cemetery
Walk the lanes of Hawai‘i State Veterans Cemetery in Kāne‘ohe, placing lei on headstones and joining a closing ceremony for Memorial Day weekend.
Event details
On Sunday morning, you can take part in the Memorial Day Lei Draping on Oahu for a hands-on, community-led act of remembrance. You will meet the Girl Scouts and volunteers from across the island at the Hawai‘i State Veterans Cemetery in Kāne‘ohe, then check in at the Memorial Plaza before heading out across the grassy slopes. Your role is simple and meaningful: place fresh flower lei on the headstones of service members, one by one, with quiet care.
You should expect a respectful, family-friendly atmosphere that welcomes individuals, couples, and multi-generational groups. We move at an easy pace across uneven ground, with the Ko‘olau Mountains framing the cemetery and setting a calm tone for reflection. Once the lei are placed, we regroup for a short ceremony that serves as the official tribute.
Plan to arrive by 8:30 AM for parking inside the cemetery, since space fills quickly. Bring water, comfortable walking shoes, and high SPF sunscreen, and consider packing a light rain shell since Kāne‘ohe showers are common and the event usually continues in light rain. Lei are often provided, but you can bring extra flowers or greenery to contribute, and if you are coming with a large group, coordinate arrival so you can stay together during distribution. The event is generally free, though some years may include a suggested donation for participants not bringing supplies.
Most volunteer work wraps by midday, leaving your afternoon open for the windward coast. If you are visiting from out of town, stay in Kailua or Kāne‘ohe to keep logistics easy and avoid the pace of Honolulu; vacation rentals and local stays through Lake.com can offer a residential base near the water. Children are welcome, but pets are typically not permitted on the cemetery grounds during the ceremony, so plan to leave your dog at your lodging.
