Event details

Merrill’s Mile asks runners to do something almost absurdly simple, and repeat it for as long as they can stand: complete a controlled loop again and again across six-, twelve-, twenty-four-, and forty-eight-hour formats at the edge of the North Georgia mountains. The event’s home at Camp Frank D. Merrill, an active Army Ranger training site, gives the race a setting most ultramarathons can’t claim, with the same terrain used to train soldiers now hosting civilian endurance athletes.

The continuous, looping format creates a close-knit atmosphere distinct from point-to-point races. Runners pass the same aid station and the same faces repeatedly over hours or days, and a running tally of laps builds a kind of shared tension among competitors who might otherwise never cross paths, trading encouragement each time they pass.

On-site camping and nearby Dahlonega lodging make the race a naturally overnight event for competitors and their support crews alike. When their runner is resting or between loops, support crews can explore Dahlonega’s wineries, hiking trails, and historic gold-rush square, turning what could be a long wait into its own small mountain getaway.
