Annual Capitol ceremony honoring fallen Missouri officers
The Missouri Law Enforcement Memorial Service brings families and supporters to Jefferson City for a formal ceremony at the Capitol Memorial Wall.
Event details
The Missouri Law Enforcement Memorial Service is the central ceremony of Capitol-weekend remembrance in Jefferson City. You’ll gather at the Memorial Wall on the north side of the Missouri State Capitol, with open views of the Missouri River and the Capitol grounds. Families, officers, and supporters come from across the state to honor those who died in the line of duty, whose names are carved into the stone wall. The tone is quiet and formal, and you’re encouraged to treat the space as a place of reflection.
You can expect a structured program with formal processions, keynote remarks from state leaders, and the reading of names. The Governor of Missouri and the Attorney General often participate, offering tributes to the fallen and support to the families present. One of the most moving moments is the placement of white carnations into a ceremonial wreath by family members. If you’re planning a full weekend, we recommend attending the candlelight vigil the evening before for a different, more intimate experience of the memorial.
Timing is straightforward: the candlelight vigil typically begins Friday at 8:00 PM, and the official Memorial Service begins Saturday at 10:00 AM, with participating officers and units lining up around 9:15 AM. Arrive at least 45 minutes early to secure seating and a clear view of the speakers and the wall. Parking near the Capitol is limited, so plan on the Senate Circular Parking Garage to the northeast via East Capitol Avenue; accessible ADA parking is maintained on North Circle Drive. The ceremony is outdoors in most conditions, so check the Jefferson City forecast and bring rain protection or a light jacket as needed.
If you’re traveling in, you’ll find convenient options close to the Capitol, including Capitol Plaza Hotel and Baymont Inn and Suites, plus regional vacation rentals near the river. Attendance is free and open to the public. Because this is a somber, formal service, it’s best to leave pets at home, and if severe weather develops, check for updates from the Missouri Law Enforcement Memorial Foundation regarding any venue changes.
