Event details

Now in its 39th year, the Mountain Lakes Triathlon sends athletes into the calm waters of Lake Guntersville for a time-trial swim before they ride flat, gently rolling roads and finish along paved greenways beside the lake. Sprint and Olympic distances, plus relay, swim-bike, and bike-run categories, widen the field well beyond serious racers alone.

Nearly four decades of continuous racing give this event a rare local following, and the calm lake conditions make the swim leg notably more approachable than an ocean or river start, a detail that draws first-time triathletes alongside longtime competitors. Families can watch the entire course unfold along the lakefront greenway without needing to relocate between legs, and the relay category lets a family or group of friends divide the swim, bike, and run legs among themselves rather than racing solo.

A 7 a.m. Olympic start and Friday packet pickup make Guntersville lodging a practical part of the race plan, with transition closing at 6:45 a.m. sharp. The organizer highlights nearby accommodations, while the city’s waterfront parks, fishing, and dining give support crews and younger family members plenty to do while the race is underway.
