Event details
What is the Nanticoke River Invasive Fishing Derby?
The Nanticoke River Invasive Fishing Derby is a vibrant annual event that takes place at Cherry Beach Park in Sharptown, Maryland. This engaging tournament focuses on tackling troublesome invasive species such as blue catfish and northern snakehead fish. Set for Saturday, July 19, 2025, with a backup date of Sunday, July 20 in case of rain, the derby spans from 5 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. It concludes with an exciting awards ceremony coupled with educational sessions about invasive species.
Who Can Participate in the Derby?
Anglers of all experience levels are warmly welcomed to join this fun event. You can fish from the shore at Cherry Beach Park or launch your boat along the Nanticoke River and its tributaries. If you’re planning to participate, remember that you’ll need either a Maryland or Delaware tidal fishing license. Good news for many is that a designated license-free zone exists at Cherry Beach Park, making it easier for everyone to join in on the action!
What Prizes and Opportunities are Available?
Entering this tournament is completely free, and it comes with over $1,000 worth of prizes up for grabs. Expect to see lures and fishing gear courtesy of local shops like Old Skool Tackle Company, PHAT KATZ Catfish Rig, and Engel coolers, sponsored by the Maryland Coastal Conservation Association. Plus, many blue catfish and northern snakeheads caught during the derby will be donated to Dr. Noah Bressman’s lab for research into their effect on the local ecosystem, focusing on diet, growth speed, and reproduction.
Why Attend the Derby with Family?
This family-friendly event goes beyond just fishing; it aims to raise awareness about the impacts of invasive species on native aquatic life. By participating, you not only have a chance to enjoy a memorable day outdoors but also help alleviate pressure on decreasing populations of striped bass and blue crabs. If you’re lucky enough to catch something, you’re welcome to take home fillets from your catches—what a great way to enjoy a lakeside meal! Join us and make a difference while having a blast!
