Event details

Nature’s Tribute: Memorial Day Hike with a Naturalist lets you mark the holiday with a guided walk through Starved Rock State Park’s sandstone canyons and bluff trails along the Illinois River in Oglesby. You will move through the park’s river corridor viewpoints with a naturalist who keeps the focus on geology, seasonal flora, and the landscape that shaped this stretch of Illinois.

You meet at the Visitor Center on May 25, 2026, with the hike beginning at 10:00 a.m. The program is free and does not require registration. Because it is a holiday weekend, plan to arrive 30 to 45 minutes early for parking and check overflow lots near Route 178 if the main lot is full.

On the trail, you can expect an overview of the park’s 18-canyon system formed by glacial meltwater, plus time to study rock faces, spring wildflowers, and birds. Spring conditions can also bring active waterfalls. Wear sturdy boots, carry plenty of water, and dress in layers for cool shaded canyons and warmer exposed overlooks.

Good to know: pets are not permitted on guided naturalist hikes or programs. The route includes steep stairs and uneven terrain, so it is not wheelchair accessible. The hike typically runs in light rain; if storms are in the forecast, confirm status with the Visitor Center and check the Utica weather report. If you are staying nearby, look to Utica or the LaSalle Peru area, or browse cabins and vacation rentals through Lake.com.
