Jousts, jesters, and a full day in the Shire
Step into a storybook world at the New York Renaissance Faire—costumes, craft stalls, hearty eats, and stage shows just a scenic drive from NYC.
Event details
The New York Renaissance Faire runs weekends from August 15 through October 4 in Tuxedo, transforming 65 forested acres into a 16th-century English village complete with jousting knights, costumed performers, craft stalls, and roving entertainers. Gates open at 10 a.m., entertainment runs until 6 p.m., and ticket prices range from $35 to $45 for adults depending on advance purchase versus day-of-show pricing, with children 5 to 12 entering at $18 and kids under 5 free. The faire sits off Route 17A in Sterling Forest, roughly an hour north of New York City, with free parking in designated lots and shuttle service to the main gates. Weekends draw crowds of 5,000 to 10,000, so arrive when gates open to maximize your time before midday bottlenecks at popular shows.
The faire grounds include eight performance stages hosting everything from bawdy comedy troupes and Shakespeare excerpts to sword-fighting demonstrations and acrobatic acts, with shows running continuously throughout the day. The centerpiece is the jousting arena, where armored knights on horseback compete in three daily tournaments that pack the grandstands and draw the loudest cheers. Between shows, browse 100-plus vendor booths selling handmade leather goods, jewelry, pottery, swords, and period clothing, much of it crafted by artisans who work the entire faire season. Food stalls offer turkey legs, meat pies, fish and chips, mead, and cider, leaning into the medieval feast aesthetic. Roughly half of all visitors come in costume, ranging from full Elizabethan gowns to simple peasant tunics, and the faire actively encourages dressing up with discounted admission for anyone in period attire.
August weather in the Hudson Valley is typically in the 80s and humid, so wear comfortable walking shoes and bring sunscreen, as much of the faire grounds offer limited shade. September and October bring cooler temperatures in the 60s and 70s, ideal for walking the hilly terrain, plus fall foliage that adds natural color to the wooded setting. The faire is family-friendly, with a children’s area featuring pony rides, archery lessons, and puppet shows, though the bawdy comedy stages skew toward adult humor. Dogs are not permitted, and strollers can be cumbersome on the uneven dirt paths, so baby carriers work better for families with young children. Plan for a full day, arrive early to catch the opening parade at 10:30 a.m., and stay through the final joust around 5 p.m. for the most complete experience.
Make the Renaissance Faire part of a Hudson Valley weekend by booking a rental on Lake.com near Greenwood Lake or Warwick, both within a 20-minute drive of the faire grounds and offering waterfront properties without guest fees. After a day in costume, head to Warwick’s Main Street for dinner at Grappa Ristorante (established 2001) or The Landmark Inn (1809), one of the oldest continuously operating inns in New York State. The faire combines theatrical spectacle, outdoor walking, and participatory fun in a setting that appeals to families, history buffs, fantasy enthusiasts, and anyone looking for a full-immersion escape from modern life in the woods north of the city.
