Memorial weekend beach season begins at Lake Red Rock
Celebrate Memorial Weekend at Lake Red Rock as swim beaches open for the season, with big-water views, picnic spots, and dam trails.
Event details
Memorial Day weekend signals the seasonal opening of North Overlook and Whitebreast beaches at Lake Red Rock, Iowa’s largest lake near Knoxville. You get public access to designated swim areas, broad sand, and day-use picnic spots with clear views across the water. Start at the Red Rock Visitor Center for current water conditions, safety updates, and a quick read on local wildlife.
Beyond the sand, you can shift into motion on paved trail segments that trace the lakeside and link multiple day-use areas. Bring a bike or walking shoes for easy miles and wide-open viewpoints that make birdwatching feel effortless. If you want time on the water, you can launch your own kayak or paddleboard and choose routes based on wind and comfort level.
Plan for peak holiday traffic: the closest parking near popular access points often fills by mid-morning on Saturday and Sunday, so arriving before 10:00 AM helps. Entry to the beaches and trails is free, shade on the open beach is limited, and you will want high SPF sunscreen plus plenty of water. Pets are generally not permitted on the designated swim beaches, so keep dogs on surrounding trails and in non-beach areas.
If you are turning this into a full weekend, Knoxville and Pella offer the quickest base for lodging, with additional vacation rentals and cabins available through Lake.com. When the beaches feel busy, we usually pivot to quieter lakefront access via the Elk Rock State Park side, or pick a different trailhead or boat ramp for more space. Concessions vary by year, so pack a cooler, and check the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers website before you leave for real-time water level and water quality updates.
