Norwalk Shines with Seafood & Culture at Oyster Festival
Seafood extravaganza with crafts, live music and coastal views.
Event details
The 48th Annual Norwalk Oyster Festival brings Connecticut’s most celebrated seafood tradition back to Veterans Memorial Park on the Norwalk Harbor waterfront, September 11 through 13, 2026. Organized by the Norwalk Seaport Association since 1977, this Labor Day weekend institution draws roughly 90,000 visitors to the Long Island Sound shoreline for three days of live music, freshly shucked Connecticut oysters, and a craft beer tent pouring more than 40 regional brews. This is not a generic fairground event — it is an annual homecoming for New England’s maritime culture, set steps from open water with harbor breezes and the kind of seafood that disappears fast.
Shucked, Stacked, and Ready to Rock
The food alone justifies the trip. Local nonprofit organizations operate the food booths, meaning your oysters on the half shell, New England lobster dinner, and fresh lobster rolls are funding local causes. The International Food Court widens the scope with Mexican, Colombian, and Italian options, plus funnel cakes and kettle corn. The craft beer tent draws serious thirst with over 40 labels on tap. On the entertainment side, the Optimum Main Stage runs from 11 AM to 8 PM each day. Friday’s Rock Country Nights opens with high-energy country and southern rock sets before Jimmy Kenny and the Pirate Beach Band — the premier Jimmy Buffett, Kenny Chesney, and Zac Brown Band tribute act — takes the stage at 8:30 PM. Saturday headliner Parmalee brings their Carolina country swagger and chart-topping sound to a crowd that knows every word. Sunday closes with VOYAGE: Celebrating the Music of Journey at 4 PM — one of the most faithful tribute acts in the business, and a crowd favorite every year. All entertainment is included in general admission.
What Waits on the Waterfront
Norwalk Harbor is reason enough to arrive a day early. The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk — a five-minute walk from Veterans Park — is one of the finest marine science centers in New England, with a working research vessel, IMAX screen, and touch tanks that keep kids completely absorbed. Sheffield Island Lighthouse, operated by the Seaport Association, offers guided boat tours out into Long Island Sound; the 1868 granite lighthouse and surrounding nature sanctuary make for a two-hour side trip that reframes the whole harbor. Before the festival opens each morning, walk the park’s waterfront path along the harbor — the light on the Sound in September is extraordinary, and it is the best time to photograph the boats moored just offshore. The South Norwalk (SoNo) neighborhood, a ten-minute stroll, has strong options for dinner: Sono Seaport Seafood has been serving Connecticut seafood since the 1980s and still does the littleneck clams and bouillabaisse right. For a more casual meal before or after the festival, Harborview Restaurant on Washington Street has water views and a straightforward raw bar.
The Fine Print Before You Go
Admission is $15 for adults, $10 for seniors 65 and older, $5 for children ages 5 to 12, and free for children under 5. On Sunday, September 13, children ages 5 to 12 enter free with a paid adult ticket. All entertainment is included — no separate concert tickets required, and seating is first-come, first-served. Free parking with free handicapped bus service runs all weekend from Calf Pasture Beach. Paid parking lots (Webster Street, Haviland Street, Maritime Aquarium Garage, and Iron Works Garage) are all within walking distance. Note that Veterans Park is located on the Norwalk Harbor, and September evenings on the Sound turn cool after dark — bring a layer. No coolers, bottles, cans, or large bags are permitted on the grounds; diaper bags and medically necessary bags are allowed and are subject to inspection at the gates. Dogs are not permitted at Veterans Park under a City of Norwalk ordinance; certified service dogs with documentation are welcome.
Quick Tips
– Arrive Friday evening for the smallest crowds and the best spot near the main stage.
– Oyster lines build by Saturday noon — get there by 11 AM for the freshest shuck selection.
– Tickets are available at the gate — there is no advance online purchase required.
– Bring comfortable shoes; the grounds are mostly grass.
– Parking fills early on Saturday — the Calf Pasture Beach shuttle is the stress-free option.
Rain Plan: The Oyster Festival runs in most weather — previous editions have been cancelled only under tornado or lightning risk conditions. If conditions look rough, check official Seaport Association social channels the morning of your visit. All food booths and vendor areas are open-air, so a light rain makes little difference to the oyster experience.
