For a spring adventure that feels like a mini expedition, Paddle for the Border sends hundreds of kayaks and canoes down the historic Dismal Swamp Canal toward the North Carolina and Virginia line.
The route is scenic and surprisingly tranquil, with dark, mirror-like water and big-sky wetlands. Bring snacks, a camera, and a sense of discovery, then linger for boardwalk strolls and wildlife spotting at Dismal Swamp State Park.
