Paniolo Traditions Race Across Waimea’s Historic Ranch Arena
Rodeo contests, horse races, live music and ranch culture bring visitors to cool upland Waimea for a distinctive Hawaiian Independence Day tradition.
Event details
Parker Ranch celebrates Hawaiʻi’s paniolo, or cowboy, legacy each Fourth of July with roping, horse racing, ranch events, food, and music at its Waimea arena, a tradition that traces back to a cattle culture predating the American mainland’s own cowboy era by decades. The green Kohala slopes surrounding the arena provide a striking, unexpected contrast to the island’s coastal resort image.
That contrast is the whole point for many visitors. Waimea’s cool upland climate, rolling pastureland, and working ranch history feel almost entirely disconnected from the beaches most travelers associate with the Big Island, and the rodeo offers a rare, accessible window into that other half of Hawaiʻi’s identity, one built on cattle drives and mountain grasslands rather than surf breaks.
Morning competition and afternoon entertainment make Waimea a rewarding day trip from the Kohala Coast, while an overnight stay allows more time for ranch country, the town’s farmers market, and a slower exploration of the surrounding hills. Advance tickets are recommended given the rodeo’s popularity during an already busy holiday week across the entire Big Island.
