Event details

Race Nights at Ober Mountain add a competitive edge to Gatlinburg’s winter ski season, typically held on select Thursday or Friday evenings from January through February, when recreational skiers and snowboarders set timed runs on a gated slalom or giant slalom course down Mogul Ridge or Bear Run.

You’ll register at the base lodge starting at 6 p.m., pick up a bib number, and watch as course officials set gates in the evening light before the first racer pushes off around 7 p.m.; participants range from serious alpine racers timing themselves against friends to casual skiers trying a race format for the first time, and everyone gets two runs with the fastest time counting for the leaderboard.

Entry fees usually run $15 to $25 in addition to your lift ticket and rental (if needed), and you can sign up on race night at the Ober Mountain ticket window or online a few days in advance if you want to guarantee a spot—some events cap at 50 racers to keep the event moving smoothly.

The course typically features 20 to 30 gates set in a rhythm that favors quick turns and tight lines, and times range from 30 seconds for advanced skiers to over a minute for beginners; officials post results on a board near the lodge after each round, and top finishers in men’s, women’s, and youth categories sometimes receive small prizes like Ober Mountain gear or free lift tickets.

After your runs, ride the aerial tram back down to downtown Gatlinburg and walk to Cherokee Grill, operating since 1999 in a rustic building near the river, for buffalo tenderloin and a whiskey flight while you replay the race in your head.

Turn race night into a winter weekend by staying at a mountain cabin near Gatlinburg on Lake.com, close to Watauga Lake or Cherokee Lake, where you can spend Saturday morning casting for walleye or simply enjoying the quiet water views before heading back to the slopes for another evening of competition and mountain air.
