Red River kicks off summer in the mountains
Head to Red River for a Memorial Day weekend of live music, family activities, and mountain-town strolls, with trailheads and chairlifts nearby.
Event details
Red River’s Memorial Day Weekend Celebration, known as Mayfest in the Mountains, signals the start of summer in this high-altitude New Mexico town. Centered at Brandenburg Park along the main street, you can spend the weekend moving between live music, family-friendly park activities, and an easy stroll past local vendor booths. Come hungry for regional food and plan time outdoors, with the Sangre de Cristo Mountains framing nearly every view.
Most of the action stays in the park during the day, then shifts to evening music sets at downtown venues. If you want a lift-assisted vantage point, ride the Red River Ski & Summer Area chairlift for wide valley views. You can also step straight into the forest from town, with trailheads that work well for hiking and mountain biking. The pace stays relaxed, so you can keep plans flexible and still catch the highlights.
Arrive early Saturday to park close to Brandenburg Park before midday crowds build. Pack layers plus high SPF sunscreen since temperatures and wind can change quickly, and the altitude intensifies UV exposure. Park events are typically free, while food, drinks, and chairlift rides are pay as you go. If the main street corridor feels busy, use the free town trolley to reach quieter pockets or your lodging.
Red River is dog friendly, so you will see plenty of leashed pets in the park. Bring a portable water bowl to keep your companion hydrated in the dry mountain air. For the easiest logistics, stay downtown so you can walk to concerts and dining; for more privacy, look for cabins and vacation rentals along the Upper Red River Valley or near the river. If afternoon showers roll through, most programming continues under tents or moves indoors, and lineups typically span country, rock, and bluegrass from around the Southwest.
