Reel Fun Kid’s Fishing Derby

The Reel Fun Kid’s Fishing Derby returns to American Falls, Idaho, on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, offering young anglers a chance to experience the excitement of freshwater fishing in a welcoming and energetic setting. Held at Riverside and Becker Ponds, this annual summer tradition invites youth of all skill levels to cast their lines, reel in some big ones, and enjoy a day filled with fun, learning, and community connection.

The derby runs from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., with registration beginning at 7:30 a.m., and is open to all youth participants. Families are encouraged to bring their own fishing gear, though a limited supply of rods and reels may be available for those without. Bait will be provided, and experienced volunteers—including seasoned anglers from partner organizations—will be on hand to assist first-time fishers and share tips on technique and safety.

While this year’s sponsors and prize details have not yet been released, past derbies have been enthusiastically supported by organizations such as the Idaho Department of Fish and Game, the Salmon-Challis National Forest, Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and NOAA-Fisheries, along with generous contributions from local businesses and individuals. Previous events have featured prize giveaways, educational booths, and plenty of encouragement for Idaho’s next generation of anglers.
