Trail runners tackle Oak Mountain’s rugged summer ridges
Ten- and twenty-one-mile routes challenge runners with rocky climbs, shaded forest, and demanding summer terrain inside Oak Mountain State Park.
Event details
Trail runners take on roughly 10.8- and 21.1-mile courses through Oak Mountain State Park, climbing rocky terrain and wooded ridgelines that make this a serious test of endurance rather than a casual weekend run. The Redbud Pavilion and BMX area serve as race headquarters, with firm cutoffs shaping the pace required for the longer distance.
August heat adds a genuine variable to an already technical course, and that combination of elevation, footing, and temperature is what separates this race from a flatter regional 10K. Families supporting a runner can treat race day as one piece of a larger outdoor visit, since Oak Mountain’s lakes and trail network stay open well beyond the course itself, giving non-runners plenty to do while cheering someone on through the finish.
Runners traveling from outside central Alabama should stay nearby the night before to manage the 7 a.m. start, park entry, and early check-in. Oak Mountain’s camping, cabins, and lakes make it easy to extend the trip into a full outdoor weekend. Train specifically for heat and elevation, carry required hydration, and review course rules before race morning.
