Event details

Saugatuck and Douglas sit a mile apart on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan, divided by the Kalamazoo River and connected by one of the most charming hand-cranked chain ferries still in operation in the United States. Labor Day weekend, September 3 through 7, 2026, is the peak of the season here — five days when Oval Beach draws its largest summer crowds, the galleries and studios stay open late, downtown restaurants run at full capacity, and the lake itself, warm from a summer of accumulating heat, is at its most forgiving for swimming. These twin towns have drawn artists, writers, and summer families since the early 20th century, and the Arts and Crafts character that defined the original colony still shapes the way the community presents itself to visitors.

Oval Beach, the Chain Ferry, and Mount Baldhead

Oval Beach has been named one of Condé Nast Traveler’s Top 25 Beaches in the World, National Geographic Traveler’s Top Freshwater Beaches in the USA, and has appeared on MTV’s Top 5 Beaches in the USA. On the final summer holiday weekend, it earns all of those distinctions simultaneously. The beach parking fee runs $15 per car during the holiday period; the Interurban Bus serves the beach from anywhere in Saugatuck or Douglas for $1 per ride each way, bypassing the parking fee entirely — the most practical option during peak weekend hours when the main lot fills before 10 AM. The Saugatuck Chain Ferry, operating since 1838 and the only remaining chain-driven ferry of its kind in the country, crosses the Kalamazoo River from downtown Saugatuck to the base of Mount Baldhead for $3 per person each way. Mount Baldhead’s 302-step wooden staircase climbs through forest to a panoramic summit deck with views over both towns, the river, and Lake Michigan — one of the finest family viewpoints in the Midwest, achievable in about twenty minutes of moderately strenuous stair-climbing, with rest platforms along the way. From the summit, a sandy trail descends the western face toward Oval Beach. Note that no dogs or alcohol are permitted at Oval Beach; Saugatuck Dunes State Park, a mile north, does permit leashed dogs on its 13 miles of dune trails.

The Arts Scene and the Saugatuck Center for the Arts

Labor Day weekend in Saugatuck carries an arts program that reflects the town’s gallery-heavy character. The Saugatuck Center for the Arts on Butler Street programs exhibitions, film screenings in its intimate cinema, and live performance events through the Labor Day period — check saugatuckartscenter.org for the specific 2026 Labor Day weekend schedule, as programming varies year to year. The downtown Butler Street strip in Saugatuck and the Blue Star Highway corridor in Douglas concentrate the majority of the working galleries and artist studios, many of which host open-studio events and informal receptions during the holiday weekend. The Saugatuck Dune Rides, a long-standing regional attraction on the dunes north of town, provides a 40-minute open-air vehicle tour of the dune landscape that works particularly well for families who want the dune experience without the physical effort of hiking them directly.

Where to Eat

Crane’s Pie Pantry Restaurant and Winery in nearby Fennville, ten minutes southeast, is the regional dining institution that Saugatuck-area visitors should build time around: farm-grown fruit pies (sour cherry, blueberry, and peach in late summer), hard cider and fruit wine tastings from their estate orchard, and cider donuts that are best eaten warm from the fryer on Saturday morning. The combination of orchard setting, farm production, and pie quality makes Crane’s one of those regional food destinations that rewards the detour regardless of what else is on the itinerary. In Douglas, Borrowed Time on Blue Star Highway is a wine bar and small-plates restaurant with a curated list and a rotating menu that draws from the surrounding agricultural corridor — the charcuterie boards and seasonal flatbreads are the approachable entry points, and the wine pours reward conversation with the staff about what’s on. For families wanting something more casual, The Boathouse Restaurant in Saugatuck sits on the Kalamazoo River and does straightforward American fare — fish sandwiches, burgers, whitefish — in a riverside setting that keeps children occupied with boat watching between courses.

Planning the Weekend

Labor Day weekend is the single busiest period in Saugatuck and Douglas’s annual calendar. Oval Beach parking fills before 9:30 AM on Saturday and Sunday; plan accordingly and use the bus or chain ferry system. Rental property availability in the immediate downtown corridor books out months in advance — search early. The holiday weekend also marks the last day of paid Oval Beach access; from Labor Day onward, beach entry is free, making the week after the weekend a genuinely appealing and less compressed alternative for anyone with schedule flexibility.

Lake Michigan Shore Stays on Lake.com

The Saugatuck and Douglas waterfront rental market is one of the most in-demand on the eastern Lake Michigan shoreline. Properties range from downtown Saugatuck cottages within walking distance of Butler Street to larger lake-view homes on the bluff above Oval Beach. Lake.com’s Lake Michigan inventory covers the full spectrum. Search Saugatuck, Douglas, and the Allegan County Lake Michigan shoreline for Labor Day availability, and plan to book at least three months out for the best properties.
