Event details

The 2026 Savannah Waterfront Independence Day Celebration carries the particular significance of America’s 250th anniversary into a setting that has witnessed American history for nearly three centuries: River Street, the cobblestone wharf built from the ballast stones of European sailing ships, where the Savannah River still runs wide and brown below the city’s storied bluff.

The free event runs from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. on July 4th at Rousakis Riverfront Plaza at 115 East River Street, with live music at Plant Riverside District, Eastern Wharf, and the plaza itself preceding the fireworks launched from a barge in the Savannah River at 9:30 p.m.

The US Army’s Third Infantry Division Brass Band and Rock Band are confirmed performers at Rousakis Riverfront Plaza from 7:30 p.m.

The 20-minute fireworks show is choreographed to a patriotic soundtrack broadcast from multiple waterfront positions.

Metered parking downtown is free on the holiday, and all River Street ramps close to vehicles at approximately 6:00 p.m.

Chairs and blankets are permitted; coolers are not.

The Waterfront and the River

The strongest fireworks viewing positions run from Rousakis Riverfront Plaza west through Plant Riverside District and east toward Eastern Wharf, with the Savannah River’s width providing a clean sightline across the water to the barge launch point in front of the Convention Center.

The Savannah Riverboat Company operates a 90-minute July 4th Fireworks Cruise with reserved seating and drink specials for those who prefer a floating vantage to the waterfront crowd.

Parking at the Savannah Convention Center on the river’s north bank and taking the pedestrian ferry across is the most practical vehicle option for those who want to avoid the post-fireworks vehicle exit on River Street.

Points of Interest for Families

The Savannah History Museum on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, housed in the restored 1860 Central of Georgia Railway passenger shed, gives families an accessible sweep of the city’s history from colonial founding through the Civil War and into the 20th century in a building whose industrial architecture is as compelling as the exhibits.

The Telfair Museums’ Jepson Center on York Street, with a dedicated ArtZeum children’s gallery, is the strongest family-oriented museum stop in the historic district for children between 4 and 12.

For families with older children, a guided walking tour of the colonial cemetery squares in the early morning, before the July 4th crowds develop along River Street, is one of the most atmospherically distinctive experiences available in any American city.

Dining on River Street and in the Historic District

The Olde Pink House on Abercorn Street, Georgia’s most storied colonial dining address in an 1771 Regency mansion, serves she-crab soup and Georgia pecan-crusted flounder in a dining room that justifies advance reservations on holiday weekends.

For a pre-fireworks meal closer to the waterfront, The Cotton Exchange Tavern on Bay Street delivers reliable American seafood and pub food on a covered terrace above the river.

Rocks on the Roof at the Bohemian Hotel on Barnard Street is the city’s most popular rooftop bar for the July 4th fireworks panorama, with elevated Savannah River views and a cocktail program that suits the occasion.

Where to Stay

Savannah’s waterfront hotels and the vacation rental inventory in the surrounding historic district squares offer accommodations that place guests within walking distance of every element of the celebration, from the Third Infantry Division concert to the barge fireworks over the river.

Book your stay near Savannah’s waterfront on Lake.com and plan a July 4th that moves through one of America’s most architecturally intact cities from morning squares to evening river.
