World-class gravel racing returns to Steamboat ranch country
Plan a Colorado getaway for SBT GRVL, combining gravel racing, rides, trail running, and expo events with outdoor recreation and an overnight-friendly summer schedule.
Event details
Routt County’s rural ranchland becomes the stage for one of gravel cycling’s premier weekends each June, as a 108-mile elite race and three shorter recreational courses wind through rolling high desert and mountain views around Steamboat Springs. A Saturday trail run adds another discipline to the mix. Expo booths give non-riding family members plenty to browse while waiting for a rider to finish one of the longer courses.
With a 2,750-rider cap and multiple expo days, downtown Steamboat effectively becomes a temporary cycling village for the weekend, giving families plenty to browse at the expo between watching different course distances finish. Younger children often enjoy the shorter recreational rides as a genuine introduction to gravel cycling themselves.
Given the rider cap and expo demand, lodging and dining reservations fill early, so book a Steamboat Stay well before summer arrives. Pack layers for cool ranchland mornings, and add Steamboat Lake or Emerald Mountain trails to extend the visit beyond race weekend. It is a genuinely scenic gravel-cycling gathering built around some of Colorado’s least-traveled backroads. Ranchland afternoons can turn hot quickly, so pack sun protection even for a morning spent mostly in the shade of the expo tents.
