Event details

New Castle marks its own version of Independence Day a few weeks early, commemorating Delaware’s 1776 break from British colonial rule with two days of programming that lean into the town’s cobblestone streets and river frontage rather than working against them. A parade and amusement rides fill the daylight hours, with vendors and live entertainment carrying the schedule toward a fireworks finale near Battery Park.

The setting does most of the work here. Battery Park sits directly on the Delaware River, and the fireworks reflect off the water in a way that flatter, inland displays can’t match. Because the town itself predates the fireworks by more than three centuries, the whole event carries a sense of layered history rather than a single-day spectacle assembled purely for the calendar.

Stay in Wilmington or within New Castle’s historic district to keep the full two days walkable. First State National Historical Park has several sites nearby worth a daytime detour, and the riverfront paths make for an easy morning walk before the second evening’s festivities begin. Admission is free throughout.
