Mountain bikers race Leadville backcountry at high altitude
Plan a Colorado getaway for Silver Rush 50 MTB, combining 50-mile mountain-bike racing and shorter challenges with outdoor recreation and an overnight-friendly summer schedule.
Event details
Rough backcountry above one of America’s highest cities becomes a mountain-bike proving ground each July, as Silver Rush riders tackle steep climbs, fast descents, and historic mining terrain through Leadville’s high country. A results board near the start and finish updates rider progress throughout the day without requiring a drive to a remote checkpoint.
Spectating families benefit from the same compact start-and-finish structure as the companion running race, watching riders depart at dawn and return through the day from a single comfortable vantage point near downtown rather than chasing the course itself.
An early start and serious altitude make a pre-race Stay genuinely valuable for visiting riders and their families alike. Reserve lodging in Leadville well ahead of race weekend, pack layers for cold mountain mornings that warm slowly at this elevation, and add Twin Lakes or Sawatch Range trails to round out the trip. It is a demanding high-altitude mountain-bike test easy to watch without leaving town. Even short walks feel harder at this elevation, so keep other planned activities genuinely light on race day.
