Event details

Sky Fest Over Fort Stevenson turns Lake Sakakawea into a skyward showcase as giant show kites rise above the bluffs and shoreline trails near Garrison, North Dakota. Over Memorial Day weekend, you will see professional flyers and hobbyists fill the horizon with massive, multi-colored designs, with plenty of room to watch from the beach, the marina, or the grassy overlooks. Bring a chair, settle in, and let the reservoir’s open water and steady wind do the work.

You can expect an energetic but easygoing scene, with everything from precision stunt kites to some of the largest show kites in production. Plan around the weekend highlights: the Saturday night fly featuring lighted kites, plus Monday’s Red, White, and Blue day. When you want a break from the main flying fields, you can join kid-friendly kite-making workshops or watch the bol races.

Arrive by 10:00 AM if you want a prime spot along the bluffs or near the marina before midday crowds. Festival entry is free, but you will need the Fort Stevenson State Park vehicle fee of $7 per day or an annual permit, and military personnel with valid ID receive free park entry on Memorial Day Monday. Pack sunscreen, a windbreaker, and layers, since breezes off Lake Sakakawea can feel cool, and if the wind is not right for giant kites, use that window to hike the shoreline trails or explore Garrison.

For the most convenient stay, book a campsite inside Fort Stevenson State Park well in advance so you can walk or drive a short distance to the fields. If you prefer a hotel or rental, base yourself in Garrison or consider Minot for more options, then plan a day trip to the festival. Pets are welcome in the park on leash, but keep them clear of kite lines, and remember that flying is weather-dependent even when the event schedule continues.
