Event details

The 51st Annual Snowmass Balloon Festival returns to Snowmass Town Park the last weekend of September 2026 — Friday through Sunday, September 25 through 27 — and it is exactly what its reputation suggests: thirty-plus hot air balloons launching into a Rocky Mountain sky at an altitude of 8,200 feet, with the aspen groves just beginning to turn gold and the peaks of the Elk Mountains framing every photograph. Free to attend, family-accessible, and genuinely one of the most photogenic outdoor events in the American West, this is the festival that regularly converts first-timers into annual returnees.

When the Night Sky Does the Talking

Friday evening belongs entirely to the Night Glow. From 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM, tethered balloons inflate across Snowmass Town Park and their burners ignite in coordinated pulses, flooding the field with color and warmth as full darkness sets in around the mountains. A live playlist runs throughout, concessions are open, and the pilots are accessible — this is the moment to let kids walk right up to the envelope fabric and feel the heat from a working burner. It is rare that an event’s opening night is its most memorable experience, but Night Glow earns that distinction without effort. Arrive by 6:30 PM to secure a position near the center of the field.

The Morning Launch

On Saturday and Sunday, balloons begin inflating before sunrise and lift off between 7:00 AM and 9:00 AM. Get there by 6:45 AM. Watching thirty balloons rise in sequence over the Rocky Mountains — some painted in geometric patterns, others in solid blocks of color — while the valley below is still in shadow is genuinely striking. The Roaring Fork Transportation Authority (RFTA) provides free bus service from Aspen and the Brush Creek park-and-ride to the Town Park Station throughout the festival weekend; this is by far the easiest way to arrive, and it avoids the limited Town Park parking entirely. Free parking is available at the Town Park Station Lot (formerly Rodeo Parking Lot) for those driving in. Hiking and biking trails above the park offer elevated viewing angles if you want the balloons in the foreground against the ridgeline — the trail access points are mapped at gosnowmass.com.

Before and After the Balloons

After the morning launches, the Snowmass Mall and Base Village open for breakfast and brunch at spots like Venga Venga, the cantina at the base of the mountain with breakfast tacos and a margarita menu that opens earlier than it probably should — and is better for it. Elk Camp Restaurant, accessed via the Elk Camp Gondola at Snowmass Ski Resort, serves mountain lunch with views that justify the gondola ticket alone. Families visiting with children should plan time at the Lost Forest at Snowmass: the multi-activity outdoor center at the ski area base runs mini golf, a ropes course, disc golf, and a zip line through September. The Roaring Fork River, 15 minutes downvalley near Basalt, is accessible for fly fishing and beginner kayaking through local outfitters. Note that dogs are not permitted on the Town Park launch field during the festival; they are welcome on the surrounding trails and in most Snowmass Village common areas.

If You’re Going with Kids
The Night Glow is the unmissable event for young children. The tethered balloons are large enough to be genuinely awe-inspiring at close range, and the combination of color, heat, and music is an experience that holds attention from toddlers through teenagers. Bring a blanket and layers — September nights at 8,200 feet are cold.

Rain and Wind Plan: Balloon launches are weather-dependent and can be cancelled or modified if winds exceed safe parameters. In past years, fire restrictions have grounded balloons and shifted the event to static inflations — visually beautiful but earth-bound. Check gosnowmass.com for morning weather updates before heading out.

Anchor Your Mountain Stay on Lake.com

Snowmass Village sits within a short drive of Ruedi Reservoir, a high-altitude lake in the Fryingpan River valley southeast of Basalt, with waterfront camping and trout fishing that rivals anything in the Colorado Rockies. For a full Roaring Fork Valley long weekend — balloon festival plus aspen color plus river access — search rental options near Basalt and the Fryingpan River on Lake.com. Late September books fast as the aspen season draws visitors from across the region.
