More than 700 entries compete across Sonoita weekend
Three days of Southwest rodeo competition, junior events, vendors, and rural fairground traditions make Sonoita a destination Labor Day gathering.
Event details
Sonoita Labor Day Rodeo has spent more than a century bringing ranch families and competitors to the grasslands of southern Arizona, with more than 700 entries competing for cash and buckles across three days. Junior rodeo action, main performances, food, vendors, and the easy camaraderie of a rural fairground round out the weekend beneath the open Santa Cruz Valley sky.
Families will find the junior rodeo events especially engaging to watch alongside the main competition: seeing younger riders compete on the same grounds as seasoned professionals gives visiting children a tangible sense of where a rodeo career begins, something a purely professional touring event elsewhere can’t quite replicate for young spectators watching from the rural fairground stands.
The event’s three-day schedule and remote wine-country setting make camping or nearby lodging part of the experience rather than an afterthought. Visitors can add Patagonia Lake, Sonoita wineries, birding, or scenic drives through the Santa Cruz Valley, turning rodeo weekend into a fuller southern Arizona getaway for the whole family well beyond the grandstands themselves.
