Spudman Triathlon Brings Major Racing to the Snake River

Event details

Burley’s stretch of the Snake River hosts one of Idaho’s longest-running triathlons each July, using the river itself for a swim leg before cyclists and runners fan out across the surrounding Magic Valley farmland. Decades of history have made the Spudman a fixture on the regional endurance calendar.

Longevity is the draw here as much as the course itself: a race with this many years behind it has refined its logistics, drawing a large and loyal regional field that treats race weekend as an annual tradition rather than a one-time challenge. A 6:45 a.m. start keeps the river swim manageable before the summer sun climbs, with the whole event wrapped up by early afternoon.

Given the early start and sizable field, most competitors and their families settle into Burley the night before rather than risk a same-morning drive. The area rewards the extra time: Milner Historic Recreation Area offers a quiet place for recovery, river boating away from the race course fills an afternoon, and City of Rocks provides a scenic detour for anyone extending the weekend.
