Event details

Symphony in the Summer turns Birmingham’s Railroad Park into an open-air concert hall as the Alabama Symphony Orchestra closes its season against the city skyline and the park’s central lake. Over three nights on Memorial Day weekend, you join a longstanding local tradition with no admission fee, a relaxed lawn scene, and programs that move from classical staples to show tunes and patriotic favorites.

Concerts typically begin at 7:30 p.m., with three distinct nightly lineups. While the repertoire changes each year, you can expect crowd-pleasers such as medleys from Wicked and ABBA, plus The Star-Spangled Banner and an Armed Forces Salute. Sunday often lands the biggest finale, leaning into popular film scores and Broadway hits, and it is the night most likely to feel like the community’s unofficial kickoff to summer.

Plan to arrive early if you want a prime spot near the lake since the lawn fills quickly before the first notes. Street parking rings the park, and metered spaces are generally free after 6 p.m. and through the weekend. Bring a picnic and your own chairs or a blanket, but leave glass containers and outside alcohol at home; food trucks and on-site vendors cover dinner plus wine, beer, and cocktails for purchase. Evenings by the water can cool off and draw insects, so pack a light jacket and quality repellent. Leashed dogs are welcome.

For the easiest logistics, stay in Downtown Birmingham or the Theatre District, or book near the UAB campus for a simple walk to the park. Performances are weather permitting, so check the Alabama Symphony Orchestra’s social channels for real-time updates if skies turn. Donations are encouraged to keep the series accessible, and seating is not provided, so you will want your own folding chairs or blanket.
