Event details

Every weekend in May and on Memorial Day, the Tennessee Renaissance Festival turns the grounds of Castle Gwynn in Arrington into a 16th-century English village. Just south of Nashville, you step into the fictional Covington Glen, where your day can begin with full-contact jousting as armored knights charge on horseback with 11-foot lances. Between bouts, you can browse a marketplace of more than 70 artisans, from leatherwork to jewelry, and plan time for a rare look inside the property. Since Castle Gwynn is a private residence, your admission includes a guided tour of the first floor plus access to the castle grounds.

You can expect a blend of historical theater and family-focused entertainment across multiple stages. Jesters, magicians, and minstrels keep the lanes lively while Queen Elizabeth I and her court preside over the village. The falconry demonstration is a standout, and the final joust of the afternoon draws the largest crowds. When you need a break, food vendors cover classic fair staples, including turkey legs and funnel cakes.

A little planning improves the day. Buy tickets online to avoid higher gate pricing, adult admission typically runs $25 to $35, and arrive by 10:00 AM if you want a reliable seat near the jousting arena. Bring cash since many smaller vendors do not take cards, and ATMs on site can mean long waits. You will be walking on uneven farm terrain, so closed-toe shoes help, and sun protection matters because the festival is fully outdoors with limited shade.

Good to know, the festival runs rain or shine, so pack waterproof layers if the forecast turns. Outside food and drinks are generally not allowed, pets are not permitted except for service animals, and any costume weapons must be sheathed and peace-tied at entry. For the castle tour, you will use the shuttle that runs from the main festival grounds up to Castle Gwynn. For lodging, Franklin and the Cool Springs area keep you close to Arrington, and for a quieter base, we often look at regional vacation rentals on Lake.com near Middle Tennessee backroads and vineyards.
