Horses, skiers, and 40-mph thrills in Teton Valley Skijoring
A high-energy skijoring weekend where horses pull skiers through gates and jumps—rowdy, family-friendly, and pure Rocky Mountain winter fun.
Event details
Teton Valley Skijoring brings the Norwegian rooted sport, where horses pull skiers at speeds up to 40 mph through obstacle courses, to the Teton County Fairgrounds at 1413 ID 33 in Driggs each February.
The 4th Annual Grand Showdown runs February 21 and 22, 2026 and features approximately 150 races across six divisions. These include Junior for ages 12 and under, Novice, Women’s, Sport, Open and Pro, and Snowboard.
Teams of three, made up of a horse, rider, and skier connected by a tow rope up to 33 feet long, navigate slalom gates, jumps ranging from 2 to 7 feet high, and hanging rings that must be collected. Penalties of 2 to 5 seconds are assessed for missed obstacles.
The competition is part of the PRO Skijor Frontier Tour, contributing to national standings and offering a guaranteed prize pool of more than $30,000 along with champion buckles. In 2025, the Open Division champions were Team Rednecks, with Jim Ryan skiing and Richard Louis Weber riding, posting a winning time of 41.45 seconds.
Spectator areas surround the track at the fairgrounds, creating a festival atmosphere with craft vendors, food trucks, and encouraged tailgating. Tickets are sold through Humanitix at tetonskijor.org, with similar Idaho events typically charging around $10 per adult and offering free admission for kids 12 and under.
The weekend also includes a Saturday evening team auction at local venues such as Guidepost Brewing. Founded as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit by Board President Neal Stobaugh, the event honors western traditions of horses and winter sport racing while boosting local rural businesses.
