Event details

For one February weekend, Fredericksburg steps back into its frontier past with the Texas Trail Roundup, a free celebration of Old West heritage featuring a downtown parade, living history demonstrations, and plenty of cowboy culture. Held annually on the first Saturday in February, the parade kicks off at 10 a.m. on Main Street, followed by activities at Market Square and the Pioneer Museum through mid-afternoon. You’ll see authentic wagon trains, costumed re-enactors, and demonstrations of blacksmithing, rope-making, and campfire cooking that bring 1800s Texas to life.

Families with kids, history buffs, and anyone who enjoys small-town parades will find this worth the trip. The parade route runs about eight blocks along Main Street, with the best viewing spots on the courthouse lawn (arrive by 9:30 a.m. to claim a spot). After the parade, head to Market Square for free activities, including kids’ games and period-accurate crafts. Street parking fills early, so use the public lots behind Main Street or arrive by 9 a.m. for curbside spots.

February in Fredericksburg typically brings cool, dry weather (highs in the 60s, lows in the 40s), so dress in layers and bring sunscreen for outdoor activities. If rain threatens, most demonstrations move under covered areas at the Pioneer Museum. Turn the weekend into a Hill Country getaway by pairing the festival with an afternoon hike at Enchanted Rock (reservations required) or a scenic drive to nearby swimming spots like the Pedernales River. Lake.com offers rentals near Canyon Lake and Lake LBJ, giving you a waterfront base for exploring the Hill Country’s mix of history, wine tasting, and outdoor trails.
