Event details

The 9th Annual Toes in the Grand Summer Kickoff Festival takes over Wolf Creek Park in Grove, Oklahoma, from June 11 through June 14, 2026. This is one of the largest free music and lake festivals in the Mid-South, held right on the shores of Grand Lake O’ the Cherokees, an expansive 46,500-acre reservoir that defines lake life in northeastern Oklahoma. Over four days, the park fills with live music, carnival rides, food trucks, boat races, and tens of thousands of visitors from across the region. Free admission to everything, every day, is part of what makes this festival a genuine community institution going on nine years strong.

## Four Days, Four Ways to Play

Thursday, June 11, opens with the American Heritage Music Festival and National Fiddling Contest, featuring some of the finest traditional fiddlers in the country. It’s the quietest and most intimate day of the event, a good entry point if crowds aren’t your preference. The carnival opens Thursday evening at 6 PM. Friday and Saturday bring the main stage to life from 5 PM, with the beer tent, food trucks, and vendors operating from noon. Saturday is the big day: the YMCA 5K kicks things off in the morning, followed by the Thunder on Wolf Creek hydroplane boat races, the Car, Truck, and Bike Show, and back-to-back carnival sessions running from noon to 10:30 PM. Sunday closes with championship day on the water.

## The Thunder on Wolf Creek Boat Races

The hydroplane races are the centerpiece of the weekend and the draw that separates this festival from every other summer event in the region. Watching purpose-built boats push across the surface of Grand Lake at competition speeds is a visceral experience, the crack of the hull on the water, the spray, the sharp turns at the course markers. Thousands of spectators line the park’s waterfront each year for the action. Arrive early for a good viewing spot along the bank, especially for Saturday’s championship rounds. Sunday’s final day of racing is the one the serious fans come for.

## Who Should Come

Toes in the Grand works for almost everyone. Families with kids enjoy the carnival rides and the open park grounds. Fishing enthusiasts and boating fans come specifically for the Thunder on Wolf Creek races. Groups of friends appreciate the free concert format, which lets you arrive and leave without a schedule. Couples looking for a relaxed summer weekend will find the lakeside evening sets hard to beat.

If you want a quieter version of the experience, Thursday’s fiddling contest is the most intimate day, with a focused musical atmosphere and none of the weekend-crowd energy. This is also the day to stake out the best spots for boat race viewing before Saturday’s crowds arrive.

## Weather and What to Pack

June in northeastern Oklahoma runs warm to hot, typically from the low 70s to the low 90s Fahrenheit, with humidity that rises through the afternoon. Evening temperatures are considerably more comfortable. Brief afternoon thunderstorms are possible but rarely last long. Bring a hat, sunscreen, a light rain poncho, and layers for the evening music sets.

## Find Your Lakeside Base

Wolf Creek Park sits directly on Grand Lake O’ the Cherokees, so the water is already part of the festival experience. After the main events, the lake offers marinas, cove swimming, and boat rentals across its 1,300 miles of shoreline. The Grove area has a wide range of lakefront cabins and vacation rentals suited for a full lake weekend.
