Event details

Every Memorial Day, the Tour of Somerville Cycling Classic turns downtown Somerville, New Jersey into a fast, tight four-corner criterium that feels like a European city-center race. You watch pro-level riders hit high speeds on a compact one-mile loop as the peloton threads through sharp turns and long straights. The day also carries real meaning, honoring past winners Furman Kugler and Carl Anderson, who later lost their lives in World War II.

Arrive late morning to claim a strong view on Main Street near the finish, where the pace is highest and the decisive moves tend to land. Racing builds through the day, with junior and amateur categories earlier and the elite Pro Women and Pro Men fields in the afternoon. Expect constant motion, quick tactical shifts, and a final-lap sprint that draws the biggest crowds.

Between heats, you can step off the course edge and reset without leaving the area. We recommend a short walk along the nearby Raritan River greenways, then circle back for the next start, or take a break at the shops and cafes that line the route. Bring a folding chair, a hat, and comfortable shoes so you can change vantage points as the races progress.

Spectator entry is free, and viewing is easy from nearly any point along the loop. The event runs rain or shine, so pack a light jacket if the forecast looks uncertain, and plan on slower cornering if conditions turn wet. Parking is available in public lots and on side streets around the downtown perimeter, and well-behaved dogs on leashes are commonly seen if your pet handles noise and crowds.
