Lake Lanier State Park Hosts Late-Summer Triathlon
Athletes swim, cycle and run at Don Carter State Park, with camping and Lake Lanier recreation encouraging a full late-summer weekend.
Event details
Don Carter State Park hosts its own Tri the Parks sprint triathlon in a quieter corner of Lake Lanier, well away from the reservoir’s busier marinas and boat traffic. A scenic open-water start gives way to a route through wooded park surroundings, compact enough to stay challenging without losing the relaxed, destination feel that runs through the whole Tri the Parks series across its various Georgia venues.
The park’s comparative seclusion is the draw for competitors who’ve raced Lanier’s other events. Fewer spectators and less boat wake make for calmer swim conditions, and the wooded course offers a genuinely different visual experience than the open shoreline found elsewhere around the lake, with the park’s newer facilities adding an extra layer of polish to race-day logistics.
Camping on-site or booking nearby Gainesville lodging helps racers manage the early start without a long pre-dawn drive. Families traveling with competitors can fill the rest of the day with paddling, horseback riding, or simply shoreline time at the park, an easy, low-key way to close out the summer racing season before heading home.
