Event details

The Kona Marathon sends runners through Historic Kailua Village and along scenic Aliʻi Drive each Fourth of July, with four distance options welcoming everyone from serious marathoners to participants looking for a shorter, more social course. Ocean views and rolling elevation changes keep the route visually engaging even for runners tackling the longest distance on offer.

Timing the race for Independence Day gives the marathon a particular local flavor: Kona’s town is already gearing up for its evening parade and fireworks by the time runners finish, so the morning’s athletic effort folds naturally into a full day of holiday celebration rather than standing apart from it, with race medals and flag-waving spectators sharing the same stretch of road.

A 5:30 a.m. start favors lodging near the course, sparing runners a long pre-dawn drive on race morning. The July Fourth date lets travelers continue directly into Kona’s evening parade and fireworks display once they’ve recovered, and the beaches and cafés along Aliʻi Drive offer relaxed, low-key recovery options for the hours in between, well before the parade route fills with a different kind of crowd.
