Charleston’s folk festival fills the Capitol complex
Traditional music, dance, storytelling, and Appalachian crafts take over Charleston’s State Capitol Complex for Memorial Day weekend at the Vandalia Gathering.
Event details
Over Memorial Day weekend, The Vandalia Gathering transforms Charleston’s State Capitol Complex into a focused, beautifully lived-in survey of West Virginia tradition. You move between outdoor stages on the Capitol grounds and the Culture Center Great Hall, where banjos and fiddles carry through the corridors and storytellers keep the pacing intimate. If you want the roots of the Mountain State in one place, this is where you spend the day, then stay for the evening sets.
Plan your schedule around the competitions, which bring serious talent and friendly rivalry to the grounds. You can catch the Liars Contest, then follow instrumental categories like fiddle, mandolin, and lap dulcimer as they rotate through the weekend. Between official sets, the best moments often happen in unscheduled jam circles on the lawn, or at the outdoor dance stage where flatfooting and square dancing pull you in fast.
When you want a quieter lane, head to the craft circle, where West Virginia artisans sell wood-fired pottery, folk toys, and hand-woven baskets that feel made for packing into a suitcase. Food booths cover Appalachian standards alongside international and American fare, so you can keep your day on site. If you have extra time, we like pairing the festival with a Kanawha Riverfront walk, then a short drive for viewpoints in the New River Gorge area.
You should expect a welcoming, community-first atmosphere, with chances to learn dance steps and talk directly with musicians and makers. Families can rely on the Old-Time for Young’uns area for games and hands-on activities tied to early state life. Arrive early for the best parking options on the Capitol Complex lots or nearby garage, bring a folding chair or blanket for outdoor contests, and wear comfortable shoes for the indoor-outdoor loop. The event is free and open to the public, pets are allowed outdoors on leashes, and only service animals are permitted inside the Culture Center.
