Event details

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial State Park Memorial Day Ceremony takes place in the high country of the Moreno Valley, just outside Angel Fire, New Mexico. You arrive to quiet pines, wide mountain views, and a memorial complex that includes a chapel and a visitor center designed for reflection. It is one of the state’s most significant gatherings, drawing families, veterans, and visitors from across the Southwest.

You can expect a calm, reverent atmosphere, with the primary ceremony held outdoors when conditions allow. The program typically includes guest speakers, a color guard, and formal military honors, with tributes that vary by year. Plan to remain quiet near the chapel and the wall of names, since this is a public park dedicated to remembrance.

Arrive at least 45 minutes early to park and secure a seat, since the morning ceremony is the busiest part of the weekend. Admission is free, and donations to the memorial’s nonprofit foundation are welcomed. Bring a light jacket and a hat, as the altitude brings fast weather changes and strong sun. The grounds are accessible, but you should expect some walking on paved and gravel paths; if the main lot fills, follow staff to overflow parking along the entrance road.

After the formal program, we suggest spending time in the visitor center to view the historical exhibits and the Huey helicopter on display, then continuing your day at Eagle Nest Lake or on nearby trails. For overnight plans, you will have the easiest access from mountain lodges and condos in the Angel Fire Resort area, or cabins and campgrounds around Eagle Nest Lake, with regional vacation rentals also available on Lake.com. If you are bringing kids, it is a meaningful educational experience as long as they can stay quiet during speeches; leashed dogs are allowed outdoors but not inside buildings. Light rain usually does not stop the ceremony, but severe weather can move parts of the program into the visitor center.
