Event details

When you step onto Front Street during Christmastown season, more than 500,000 lights transform this Washington mountain village into something that feels plucked from the Alps. The Village of Lights runs from November 27, 2026 through December 24, with the illuminated displays continuing through February 2027 for Winter Karneval and Love from Leavenworth celebrations.

Lights glow daily from 6 AM to 11 PM, and admission to view them is completely free.

The Wenatchee River flows alongside downtown, its waters originating from Lake Wenatchee just 21 miles upstream, connecting this Bavarian-styled village to the broader waterway network that defines the Central Cascades. For winter travelers seeking both festive atmosphere and access to Pacific Northwest waterways, Leavenworth delivers an unusual combination: Christmas markets steps from river trails and alpine lake country a 30-minute drive away.

The culinary scene reflects decades of German heritage baked into these streets. Andreas Keller Restaurant (829 Front Street), founded in 1989 by David Forchemer, serves schnitzel and spätzle in underground barrel booths with live accordion music, now run by his daughter Heidi.

München Haus (709 Front Street), opened in 2001 by Oliver and Pam Brulotte, draws crowds to its outdoor beer garden for charbroiled sausages and 20 specialty mustards. The Brulottes later founded Icicle Brewing Company (935 Front Street) in 2010, where you can warm up with winter ales beside outdoor fire pits.

At the gazebo in Front Street Park (820 Front Street), weekend entertainment fills the air from 11 AM to 6 PM on Saturdays and Sundays. The Marlin Handbell Ringers, a community group formed in 1979 and directed by Joyce Phipps, perform with 108 English handbells. The Leavenworth Village Voices, a choir founded in 1982 under current director Mindy Wall, brings four decades of local tradition to their holiday concerts. The Leavenworth Alphorns add authentic Bavarian mountain sounds throughout the season.

Free activities at the Leavenworth Festhalle (1001 Front Street) include the annual Gingerbread House Exhibition, Santa and Mrs. Claus photo sessions (bring your own camera), craft stations, and a Letters to Santa station. Santa appears at the gazebo with Rudolph and friends at noon on Saturdays and Sundays, then moves to the Festhalle for photos from 2 PM to 4 PM.

The best window for photography falls between 4:30 PM and 6 PM when twilight mingles with the light displays. December weekends draw shoulder-to-shoulder crowds along Front Street, so consider weekday visits when programming continues but streets stay manageable. Visitors in January and February see the same lights, with far fewer people and better snow conditions.

Getting here without parking headaches means using the free Link Transit Route 32 shuttle, which runs every 15 minutes during festival weekends from the Wilkommen Park-and-Ride at 200 Ward Strasse, with 89 free parking spaces and EV charging. Downtown parking costs $3 to $4.50 per hour, and Front Street closes to vehicles during peak festival periods.

For those wanting to extend the trip beyond the village lights, Lake Wenatchee State Park offers 50 kilometers of groomed cross-country ski trails along the lakeshore and river, plus a 150-foot groomed sled hill and heated restrooms. Closer to town, the 17-acre Waterfront Park provides three miles of winter walking trails along the Wenatchee River, just two blocks from the Christmas festivities.

The newly opened The Springs hydrotherapy spa (200 Zelt Strasse) features outdoor hot and cold plunge pools with views of the Enchantments, a perfect way to recover after a day on the trails or in the cold. Fish Lake, 16 miles north, draws ice fishing enthusiasts from December through April.

This combination of European-style holiday celebration and genuine Pacific Northwest water access makes Leavenworth a rare find for travelers who want their winter getaway to include both cobblestone charm and wild rivers.
