Event details

Downtown Ketchum anchors Idaho’s most storied Labor Day tradition, where the Big Hitch Parade — a procession of historic horse-drawn wagons — leads a three-day weekend of music, heritage displays and family activities, running daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., that celebrates the Wood River Valley’s mining and ranching past.

The Big Hitch Parade is the genuine centerpiece here, assembling some of the largest teams of horses and heaviest freight wagons still in operation anywhere, a spectacle that draws visitors specifically for the parade rather than treating it as one attraction among many.

Labor Day timing and Sun Valley’s resort setting mean lodging fills early, so reserving a room well ahead of the holiday weekend is worth the planning. Visitors extending their stay beyond the parade will find Sun Valley’s trail network ideal for an early-morning hike, Redfish Lake worth the scenic drive south, and the Sawtooth Scenic Byway offering some of Idaho’s most photographed mountain views along the route north. Free admission to the parade and most heritage displays keeps the weekend accessible for visiting families.
