Event details

WaterFire Providence is a public art installation created by artist Barnaby Evans and first presented in 1994 as a single-night event marking the reopening of Providence’s uncovered rivers. It has since evolved into one of the most recognized public art events in New England, drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors each season to the confluence of the Woonasquatucket, Moshassuck, and Providence rivers in downtown Providence. On lighting nights, more than 80 iron braziers anchored to the riverbeds are loaded with wood and ignited at dusk by gondoliers in black, creating a line of firelight that extends several blocks through the city’s downtown waterway system. Classical and world music plays from shoreline speakers, and the crowd that gathers along the river walks is typically in the tens of thousands.

WaterFire operates on a select-Saturday schedule from late spring through December, with lighting nights announced in advance at waterfire.org. The 2026 season runs through December 31. Full lighting events, which illuminate all 80-plus braziers across the full river system, are the most atmospheric; partial lightings cover a shorter section and are more intimate. The event is free to attend and open to all ages. There is no central ticketing, no reserved viewing, and no formal admission. The best vantage points are along the Riverwalk between Waterplace Park and Steeple Street Bridge, where the braziers are most densely arranged and the music and firelight overlap most completely. WaterFire also operates gondola rides by reservation on lighting nights, which provide a completely different perspective from the water level.

Providence Around the Rivers

The streets surrounding the WaterFire zone form one of the more historically layered urban walking circuits in New England. Benefit Street on College Hill, known as the “Mile of History,” runs adjacent to the oldest continuously occupied neighborhood in the country and includes the Rhode Island School of Design Museum, which holds a permanent collection of more than 100,000 works and is free on certain evenings during WaterFire. Federal Hill, Providence’s Italian neighborhood a few blocks west of the river, is one of the best dining districts in New England for pre-event dinner, with the DePasquale Plaza fountain at its center serving as an informal gathering point before the waterway walk toward the rivers. Scialo Brothers Bakery on Atwells Avenue, open since 1916, is the neighborhood’s most established pastry destination and produces the kind of sfogliatelle and ricotta cookies that justify the detour entirely.
