Groundhog Day fun with Ontario’s famous Willie
Join the Wiarton Willie Festival for Groundhog Day predictions, winter entertainment, and a lively small-town atmosphere near the Bruce Peninsula shoreline.
Event details
Every February, you can witness Canada’s most famous groundhog make his official prediction at this beloved celebration on the shores of Colpoy’s Bay. Wiarton Willie, the world’s only albino weather prognosticator, has drawn crowds since 1956, and the 70th anniversary celebration runs January 30 through February 2, 2026.
Arrive by 6:30 AM on Prediction Day for the 7:00 AM fireworks, then watch Mayor Jay Kirkland translate Willie’s forecast in “Groundhogese” at 8:07 AM sharp.
The weekend includes free family fun at Bluewater Park with trackless train rides, inflatable mazes, sleigh rides, axe throwing, and horse-drawn wagons. Evening dances feature live bands like Fat Tony and Midnight Blue, $20 tickets. If crowds get thick, Saturday’s Bluewater Park activities from 10 AM to 2 PM offer the same spirit without the early wake-up call.
Wiarton sits at the gateway to Bruce Peninsula, where Georgian Bay’s rugged limestone shores meet some of Ontario’s most stunning waterfront. Colpoy’s Bay provides calm waters perfect for kayaking, while Sauble Beach, the second-longest freshwater beach in the world, lies just 20 minutes west. The Wiarton Marina accommodates boats up to 55 feet and sits beneath the dramatic Niagara Escarpment cliffs.
For dinner, head to Red Bay Lodge Restaurant, serving guests since 1949, where you can enjoy hearty Canadian comfort food with a view. The Wiarton Inn Restaurant and Bar offers excellent Chinese and Thai dishes if you are craving something different.
Parking is free at designated festival areas, and all prediction morning activities cost nothing. For your stay, browse Lake.com for Georgian Bay and Bruce Peninsula cottages starting around $160 CAD per night, perfect for families wanting to extend this winter getaway into a full lakeside retreat.
