Event details

The Wilderness Survival Hike at Lake Brownwood State Park gives you a grounded look at the Cross Timbers landscape of Central Texas, with a ranger leading the way along the lake shoreline. You will learn how native peoples and early settlers used what grew and lived here, focusing on practical takeaways you can recognize on your own future walks. If you want a quieter alternative to typical holiday crowds, this program keeps the focus on the land and how it sustained daily life.

You will meet your guide at the Texas Oak Trailhead for a hands-on session identifying useful plants and fungi, with clear guidance on what to notice in the brush and understory. The walk moves at a steady, manageable pace for families and solo hikers, though expect some uneven ground typical of an easy to moderate trail. Along the way, we pause for shoreline views while rangers share local history and resource knowledge in context.

Plan to arrive at least 15 minutes before the 1:30 PM start time to check in. Wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes, bring plenty of water, and pack insect repellent for the wooded sections. Participation is included with your paid park entrance fee, and you should reserve your day pass online in advance in case the park reaches capacity.

This is an outdoor program and weather can affect scheduling, so check with park headquarters if heavy rain is in the forecast. After the walk, you can stay for a lakeside picnic or spend the afternoon fishing for bass and catfish on Lake Brownwood. If you are extending your visit, the park offers cabins and campsites along the lakefront, with additional lodging options in the Brownwood area available through Lake.com.
