Wildflower weekend with guided hikes at Wind Wolves
Two days of spring wildflower hikes, family nature activities, and big views at Wind Wolves Preserve—an easy outdoor escape from the Central Valley.
Event details
Few wildflower experiences in California compare to Wind Wolves Preserve, one of the largest privately protected wildlands in the American West. Each March, the preserve opens its gates for two free days of guided walks, hands-on nature stations, and unobstructed views of the San Emigdio Mountains rolling out in every direction. In 2026, the Spring Nature Fest runs Saturday and Sunday, March 21 and 22, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 16019 Maricopa Hwy, Bakersfield. No tickets. No admission fee. Just open trail.
What you’ll actually see
Lupine, goldfields, and California poppies typically peak in mid-to-late March, painting the hillsides in colors that reward any photographer who shows up with a wide-angle lens. Nature educators lead small-group guided walks and hands-on kids’ stations covering native birds, pollinators, and high-desert plant life. Keep binoculars handy: tule elk and pronghorn have appeared on the ridgelines in past years, and the San Emigdio Creek adds a quiet riparian layer to the landscape.
Quick Tips
• Wildflower timing is rainfall-dependent. Check the Theodore Payne Foundation wildflower hotline or the preserve’s social channels the week before you go.
• Saturday morning offers the best access to guided walks before groups fill.
• Bring water, snacks, sunscreen, and layers. No vendors operate inside the grounds, and afternoon wind off the foothills can be sharp.
• Leashed dogs are welcome in select areas. Confirm trail accessibility for strollers with staff on arrival.
Make it a weekend
Pair the festival with an afternoon on nearby Lake Ming, where you can kayak or walk the shoreline before the valley light fades. For a more scenic overnight, lake cabin rentals near Lake Isabella, about an hour east, give you a quiet base and morning on the water. Search available properties on Lake.com.
