Madison’s Brat Fest brings music, food, and giving
A three-day Memorial Day weekend festival serving brats, live music, and family fun, raising money for local charities in Madison.
Event details
The World’s Largest Brat Fest is how Madison marks the start of summer, held each Memorial Day weekend on Willow Island at the Alliant Energy Center near Lake Monona. You can walk in for free, grab a Johnsonville bratwurst, and settle in for live music across multiple stages. Since 1983, we have watched it grow from a small cookout into a major fundraiser that has generated millions of dollars for more than 100 local nonprofits.
Expect a mix of state fair comforts and outdoor concert pacing, with clear zones that make it easy to plan your day. You will find a Carnival with rides, a Farm Zone with a petting zoo, and a Sports Zone for volleyball and cornhole. Friday morning brings the Take Your Brat to Work Day drive-through, and Sunday night closes with fireworks.
Food is built around Wisconsin staples: traditional brats, jalapeño cheddar chicken brats, and plant-based options, plus roasted sweet corn and local pours from Capital Brewery and Karben4. Bring a lawn chair or blanket for the stages since seating is first come, first served, and aim for late morning if you want shorter lines. Parking at the Alliant Energy Center is free, though many locals bike in on the paths that connect directly to the grounds; note that alcohol sales are cashless.
Plan logistics before you arrive. Dogs are not allowed inside the festival grounds, and while factory-sealed water is permitted, outside food and other beverages are not. If you want the shortest commute, book near the Alliant Energy Center at options like Clarion Suites or Holiday Inn Express; for a city-focused stay, choose downtown near Monona Terrace and the State Capitol, or look to Lake.com for rentals farther from the crowds.
