Guided Ohiopyle history hike from Kentuck Campground
Join a guided Tom Faucet hike at Ohiopyle, then spend the rest of the day on the GAP Trail or scouting river overlooks nearby.
Event details
The Youghopoly Tom Faucet Hike brings you beyond the standard overlooks for a close reading of Ohiopyle State Park’s rugged past in Pennsylvania’s Laurel Highlands. Starting at the Kentuck Campground Contact Station, you and your group walk into the woods to follow the legacy of Tom Faucet and the early travel routes that helped define this river-carved landscape. Along the way, we compare local lore with the actual geography of the Youghiogheny River corridor.
You will move at a steady pace over forest terrain while a park educator shares stories from the region’s pioneer era. Plan for more than an hour on uneven, sometimes damp ground, so this is best for active families, pairs, and anyone comfortable hiking rather than strolling.
Arrive 15 minutes before the 9:30 AM start to check in, and wear sturdy closed-toe hiking shoes. Bring a reusable water bottle, apply insect repellent before you set out, and expect parking to tighten on holiday weekends, so carpool if you can. The program is free and open to all ages, though children should be able to keep up on wooded trails.
After the walk, you can continue your day on the Great Allegheny Passage trail or drive to nearby river overlooks for a look at the whitewater. If severe weather cancels the hike, head to the visitor center near Ohiopyle Falls for indoor exhibits. If you are staying overnight, choose from Kentuck Campground sites, resorts in Farmington, or regional rentals through Lake.com. Dogs are generally allowed on leash, but confirm trail and group guidelines with the guide at check-in, and note that late arrivals may miss the prompt departure from the contact station.
