Why Rent On Lake Murray
Lake Murray spreads across Lexington, Richland, Saluda, and Newberry counties in South Carolina, just 15 minutes west of Columbia. With over 600 miles of shoreline and a surface area exceeding 50,000 acres, this reservoir is one of the largest in the state, and its combination of accessibility, natural beauty, and recreational variety makes it one of the most popular lake destinations in the Southeast.
Rent a Lakehouse and Stay Awhile
Lake Murray has an outstanding inventory of vacation rentals, from cozy two-bedroom cabins in quiet coves to luxury lakehouses that sleep 20 guests with private docks, hot tubs, pools, and sweeping water views. The lake’s proximity to Columbia means you can stock up on groceries easily, and the waterfront neighborhoods are safe, residential, and welcoming for families with kids and dogs. Many rentals are pet-friendly, and the outdoor space around most lakehouses gives pets room to roam freely.
Boating, Paddling, and Purple Martin Season
The lake is a full water sports destination, with boating, sailing, fishing, kayaking, paddleboarding, and water skiing all popular throughout the season. Bomb Island, a small uninhabited lake island, hosts one of the largest Purple Martin roosts in North America each summer. Watching tens of thousands of these birds settle in at sunset over the open water is one of those natural spectacles that is difficult to describe and impossible to forget.
Cycling, Hiking, and the Lake Murray Dam
The Lake Murray Dam Recreation Park has walking trails and beautiful views of the spillway and the lake beyond. Cycling and hiking paths along the shoreline and through adjacent Saluda Shoals Park give non-boaters plenty of options for active mornings. Birdwatching along the lake’s edges is consistently rewarding, and the mix of open water and wooded coves creates habitat for a surprising variety of species throughout the year.
Columbia’s Best Attractions Are Close By
The Riverbanks Zoo and Garden in Columbia is one of the top-ranked zoos in the country and a full-day destination for families with children of any age. The historic Newberry Opera House, about 40 minutes from the lake, offers live performances throughout the year for evenings when you want culture alongside your lake time. Between the water and the city, a week on Lake Murray can be as full or as quiet as your family needs it to be.
