Cooper River Yacht Club, situated at 450 S Park Dr in Collingswood, New Jersey, is a gem that has been a cornerstone of sailing community since its founding in 1945. Established by a small group of passionate sailors, the club was instrumental in initiating sailboat races, a tradition that continues to this day, thanks in part to the efforts of veteran sailor Harry Chandler from New England.
The club’s location on the Cooper River, a body of water transformed from a narrow stream to a lake through the efforts of the Works Progress Administration and the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Great Depression, offers an ideal sailing experience. The river, shielded from tidal influences by a downriver dam, provides a serene and predictable environment for sailors.
Cooper River Yacht Club is a family-oriented community that welcomes members from all walks of life, regardless of social standing or nationality. Here, one doesn’t need to own a boat to participate; the club’s community sailing program allows members to access club-owned boats with a simple membership fee. The club’s picturesque setting, with views of the Philadelphia skyline, makes it a perfect spot for both casual and competitive sailing enthusiasts. Throughout the year, members enjoy fleet racing and special events, enhancing the rich sailing heritage of the club.
