Horizon Shipbuilding, situated at 13980 Shell Belt Road in Bayou La Batre, Alabama, is a testament to maritime ingenuity and resilience. Founded in 1997 by the Short family, this shipyard has a rich history marked by both challenges and achievements. After emerging from its first bankruptcy in 2002, Horizon expanded its operations, delivering vessels to diverse clients including defense, fishing, and towboat industries. By 2016, the company had grown to employ about 350 people and generate annual revenues of $40 to $50 million.

Despite financial setbacks, including a significant loss on a NYC Ferry contract, Horizon’s legacy in shipbuilding is undeniable. The shipyard, now part of Metal Shark Alabama following its acquisition in 2017, boasts advanced facilities and a versatile capability in constructing steel, aluminum, and fiberglass vessels. Its strategic location across the bayou allows for comprehensive shipbuilding services, making it a significant player in the maritime industry. The site’s evolution, from its beginnings as Owen-Short Marine to its current state, reflects a commitment to innovation and excellence in shipbuilding.
