The best time to go up the New River is within an hour after high tide at the Andrews Avenue Bridge so that you will have slack to current against you when navigating the five bridges. The opposite holds true for the trip downstream. Be sure to check times bridges are closed for commuter traffic. The current ranges from weak to strong. Transit time from the ICW to LMC takes about one hour for a trawler. Although your first instinct might be to stay clear, following a tow up or down the river will ease your passage through bridges and traffic
