The San Juan Island Yacht Club, situated at 273 Front St, Friday Harbor, WA, is a vibrant hub of maritime activity that has been a cornerstone of the community since its inception in May 1964. Conceived by a group of enthusiastic boat owners during a picnic cruise to Sucia Island, the club quickly grew, registering as a nonprofit corporation with 102 charter memberships and adopting its distinctive burgee by July of the same year.
Over the decades, the club has evolved, transitioning from renting space at the Friday Harbor Grange Hall to inaugurating its own clubhouse overlooking the harbor in January 1987. This elegantly designed clubhouse has undergone several transformations, including a major facelift in 1998 and the addition of an expansive “infinity deck” in 2016, offering members a panoramic view of the port of Friday Harbor.
Today, the San Juan Island Yacht Club is the island’s largest boating organization, boasting over 300 members who share a passion for both power and sail boating. The club actively promotes all forms of boating in the Pacific Northwest, hosting various cruising and meeting programs, including the esteemed Shaw Island Classic sailboat race. This picturesque marina is a testament to the enduring spirit of its founding members and a beacon for those who cherish the beauty and adventure of the sea.
